Shopping for an Eggplant

When i was growing up, i only knew of one eggplant: the long slender purple kind. Now that i'm older, i still know of that same eggplant. LOL. I guess you can call me naive when it comes to cooking ingredients. I just don't do the cooking stuff. No No No. I don't do food shopping either. The closest I've come to food shopping was tagging along with my parents while they picked out what we needed, or tagging along with my room mate when we shared an apartment together. Yeah, i'm pretty bad. That is why no one has ever asked me to pick up anything food related for the house. So when i received a call from my dad asking me to bring home an eggplant, i was a bit uneasy to take on such a task. Thoughts were flying through my head. "What if i buy the wrong thing? What is an eggplant? Where do i buy that darn plant?" Egg plant. The two just don't belong together. LOL. These thoughts are no exaggeration my friends. My dad even described to me what an eggplant looks like and which kind he wanted.

Dad: "Bring me the long purple one, just like the one from the philippines. if you can't find one, then just bring home the round one."

Me: "a round one? is there a round eggplant?"

Dad: "yes"

Me: "where do i get an eggplant?"

Dad: "there will be stores on 61st. you'll see it. i just need one."

I found my way to the veggie department at a nearby grocery store. There I was staring at the vegetables, labeled and organized beautifully. There were 4 signs for eggplants. Now, how am i supposed to know which one is which? Darn it. There were long slender green kind, round green ones, oval-shaped purple fat ones, and medium length fat purple ones. Ummm, I really looked perplexed, soo perplexed and embarrass because the guy in front of me was staring at me (probably mocking my incompetence to buy a single veggie). i had to call my dad for assistance. lol. i ended up taking home 2 of the medium length fat purple ones. and they were the perfect ones he said. hehehehe
