Bilingual Child

We took Matt to the doctor for his 9 month check up and immunization the other day.  We were advised not to baby talk and to speak to Matt in Tagalog so he will become bilingual.  Since Myk and i both speak Tagalog fluently, i figured this would be easy.

This should be easy, right? But why do we often find ourselves speaking to him in English? A lot of people are telling me to speak to him in Tagalog but when they interact with Matt, they talk to him in english as well.

"Aww, you're such a cute baby". "You look like your daddy". "Where's the light?"

Maybe because english words are easier to say. 

"No" is easier to say, also shorter, than the tagalog word "Hinde".

When i tell him its time to eat, I say "It's time to eat" as opposed to saying "Oras na para kumain". 

I praise him in english too, "Good Job!".  How do you translate that to Tagalog? "Magaling na trabaho?"

It's too long to say.

I'm trying to make it a habit to speak tagalog and english. Something like this "San yung light?" It still translates to where's the light. Then when he looks up, i then say "Light. ilaw".  I don't know if it's going to work.  We'll see.
