Tech Overload

Today’s society is so heavily dependent on technology that we cannot function without our smart phones, ipads, nooks, kindles, laptops, and whatever gadget there is available. Guilty. I know I can’t.  And this is a bad habit. One that I want to lessen because I use it excessively.  I don’t want to kick this habit, just reduce my daily usage to have some alone time.

I’m getting so attached to my iphone that even when I’m in class, I find myself constantly glancing at it. If there’s no text message, i open up facebook app and read newsfeeds.  Then I close it. A few seconds later, i’m on “words with friends” app figuring out a word where I can fit in the 3W tile. When that is done, i’m looking at my email.  And then looking at photos.  It’s like that throughout the day.  Even at night.

I’ve notice that I sleep later than usual because I’m either on the iphone or ipad looking for something to do: browsing the web, searching for new apps, trying out new downloaded apps, shopping for more apps, looking at e-books, reading entertainment news, or making my phone look pretty.

An hour would pass without me noticing. It’s gotten to a point where I use the iphone to lull me to sleep.  Crazy, right?  My 15 month old son is also hooked on the “pai pa”, as he calls it because he can’t seem to pronounce ipad properly.  He and i would fight for the darn thing.  He wants to play it with and i want to use it. I literally have tug-of-war moments with him.  Lots of pulling. And he’s got quite an arm for his age.  He uses his cute little cries and tears to get me to let go of the ipad, then runs off with a huge grin on his face, while those tears fall on his cheeks.  I get tricked a lot.

Soooooo, I’ve decided to have all the gadgets off from 830pm on.  I’ll start at 9pm today since I got home a bit late and wanted to blog first. No iphone. No computer. No ipad. Just some me time.  This will give me time to relax, reflect, and rest without any disturbance.  As much as a convenience these gadgets are, they are also nuisances.  I remember trying to write a paper last night and both iphone and ipad were constantly beeping.  Either new mail comes in or a notification from one of the apps.  It was annoying.

Oh, it’s 8:53 now and must end this post. i’m signing off.
